I'm glad you're here.
My name is Saige (she/her), like the spice and wisemen.
I am a scientist working towards implementing value-based machine learning in society, particularly in healthcare systems. I think about optimizing systems for utility instead of intelligence.
I currently work as a Ph.D. candidate at Radboud University Medical Center and the Donders Institute with Andre Marquand and Eric Ruhe on machine learning applications in psychiatry. My work connects and balances data-driven machine learning techniques with clinical domain knowledge to ultimately build tools that can empower patients. I am interested in characterizing + summarizing the ways in which people differ from each other, and in questioning + testing the labels used to categorize people. Previously, I worked as a data scientist for Ivy Tso and Chandra Sripada in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and as a research assistant on a project (led by Moriah Thomason) studying maternal and fetal health in Detroit, Michigan.
I am passionate about contributing to open science - within my field, across disciplines, and especially work that can reach outside the scientific community. I also deeply care about inspiring more women to learn computer science.
Outside of work, I love being outdoors and enjoy connecting with fellow outdoor enthusiasts.

What does ubuntu really mean?
"I am, because you are". In fact, the word ubuntu is just part of the Zulu phrase "Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu", which literally means that a person is a person through other people. Ubuntu has its roots in humanist African philosophy, where the idea of community is one of the building blocks of society. Ubuntu is that nebulous concept of common humanity, oneness: humanity, you and me both.
